The water leakage issue in this home had persisted for more than two years, and the exact source of the leak remained unidentified.

Initially, water was leaking from the balcony down to the unit below. The concerned downstairs neighbor hired a technician to inject sealant at the leak point, hoping for a quick fix. However, once the balcony was sealed, the leak shifted to the living room. When that area was sealed, the bedroom began to show water seepage.

This back-and-forth sealing continued. Eventually, so much sealant was used that it started oozing through the flooring gaps upstairs.

“After spending tens of thousands of yuan on sealant, we thought we’d finally managed to plug the leaks.”

Although the downstairs leakage stopped, the upstairs flooring began accumulating serious water pooling.

To relieve the water pressure beneath the floor, the worker drilled small holes to divert the water. One was even made near the drainage pipe. Still, the true source of the water intrusion remained a mystery.

Water Meter Leak Detection Method

To rule out internal plumbing issues, the team started with the water meter leak detection test, a basic yet effective way to check for hidden water pipe leaks. Here’s how it was done:

  1. Turned off all water-using appliances: toilets, washing machines, heaters, etc.
  2. Recorded the current water meter reading and ensured the main valve was shut off.
  3. Waited 10–15 minutes to ensure no residual flow.
  4. Reopened the valve and checked for changes in the meter.
  5. The needle continued to move—indicating a leak in the cold water pipe system.

This step confirmed that the water leak wasn’t from rain or surface cracks—it was a plumbing issue within the household’s water supply.

Moisture Meter Inspection: Accurately Locating Abnormal Areas

Next, a moisture meter for water leakage detection was used to scan the home. This non-invasive Moisture Meter reads the moisture content in building materials like walls and floors—ideal for identifying hidden water leaks.

Moisture inspection findings:

  1. The balcony floor showed significantly elevated moisture, with rising damp patterns toward the wall base.
  2. The bedroom wall near the balcony showed extremely high readings; the opposite wall had normal moisture levels.
  3. Similarly, the living room wall near the balcony showed high humidity; the rest of the living room appeared dry.

Based on this moisture meter analysis, it was clear the source was somewhere close to the balcony’s cold water piping.

This moisture mapping technique was vital in narrowing down the affected zones, helping avoid random demolition.

Acoustic Leak Detector: Pinpointing the Leak Location

To go a step further, a professional-grade acoustic leak detector was deployed. These devices are specialized leak detection tools that detect the sound of water escaping under pressure—even through concrete and tiles.

Using the detector, they scanned along the balcony water line. Eventually, they picked up a distinct leak sound beneath the washing machine area. This revealed the exact pipe section that was compromised—beneath the floor near the appliance.

With the customer’s approval, the team carefully removed the tiles and floor surface.

A visible crack was found at the elbow joint of the cold water pipe.

This minor but critical damage was the hidden water leak source. Due to poor welding at the elbow, water had been slowly seeping, saturating the surrounding floor and walls, and eventually leaking into the apartment below.

At last, after two years of trial and error, expensive sealants, and endless frustration—the real culprit was found using the right leak detection tools:

  • Moisture meter for surface-level detection and mapping;
  • Acoustic leak detector for pinpointing the underground pipe crack.
